Dredging

Cockburn Cement dredges shellsand from two areas in Owen Anchorage, referred to as the Medium-Term area and Long-Term area.  Environmental approval for the Medium-Term area is provided under Ministerial Statement 494, and for the Long-Term area under Ministerial Statement 599. Dredging in the Medium-Term area will continue until December 2012, and in Stage 2 of the Long-Term area until 2031. Dredging in Stage 1 of the Long-Term area ceased in July 2010.

Careful monitoring and management of the environmental impacts of dredging is provided for by a comprehensive Environmental Management Programme (EMP).
